Art
"Every child is an artist." Pablo Picasso
Our Intent
Our curriculum encourages curiosity and creativity. It gives our children the skills to be independent and resilient artists. Our curriculum will:
- stimulate children’s creativity and imagination by providing visual, tactile and sensory experiences.
- help children explore the world at first hand, using all their senses and experimentation, and so gain knowledge and understanding of the world in which they live.
- develop children’s understanding of colour, form, texture, pattern along with their ability to use different materials and processes to communicate their ideas, feelings and meanings.
- grow up inspired to be the creative thinkers of the future - designers, illustrators, graphic designers, curators, sculptors and painters.
- explore a range of artistic work, children will take inspiration from both classic and contemporary artists from a range of different cultures.
- gain first hand experiences through visits to different museums both locally and further afield.
Implementation
Our art curriculum develops creativity and inspires children to stretch their understanding of the world. We are passionate about giving children knowledge and experiences which they need to allow them to explore their own creative potential. As they progress, they will be encouraged to incorporate their own interpretations and responses to the world of art and design.
The children will engage in an exciting curriculum that supports them to understand how art and design contribute to different societies and cultures, past and present. Our children's’artistic journey will be documented throughout their time at Primary School inside the My Primary Art book. This will allow them to visually see progress and inspire them to continue to explore their creativity in the future, knowing that there are no limits to what they can achieve.
Cultural Capital
In art, our children explore the creations of a diverse range of experiences including: drawing, painting, sculpting, printing and digital mediums.
They also engage with a wide range of cultural art forms, including various art movements and different artistic practices such as architecture.
Children will discover the work of both iconic artists and local artists and visit galleries, engaging in hands-on workshops. They will also explore different career paths in art and design through class trips and visitors
Long Term Plan
Impact
Norbreck Primary Academy provides children with opportunities to develop their artistic skills and enable them to understand and appreciate that art is all around them in many different forms. We want to inspire the children to realise their creative potential and broaden their understanding of the subject. Art will fire their imagination and give them a way to express themselves. They will know that there is great pleasure to be derived from Art and Design and, through a deeper understanding, pupils can gain access to cultural richness and diversity. As they grow, the children will be prepared to continue their artistic journey, knowing they can effectively contribute to an increasingly creative work force in a variety of mediums and professions.
"Art is exciting because I get to paint with dark and light colours like Romero Britto. His work is colourful. I love it!" Pearl, age 6
"When I'm doing art, I feel so good. I love creating things from my imagination. The world is my canvas and I just want to paint it!" Evelyn, age 10
