Geography

"The world is not in your books and maps, it's out there." - Gandalf

Our Intent

Through their work in geography, pupils will learn about their local area and compare their life in this area to that in other regions within the United Kingdom and the rest of the world. Through their growing knowledge and understanding of human geography, children will gain an appreciation for life in other cultures. It is our intention to motivate pupils to find out as much as they can about the physical world and enable them to recognise the importance of being a global citizen. We aspire to inspire and nurture in children a curiosity and fascination with the world around them that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

The main intention of our Geography curriculum is to foster a love of ther world around us and to inspire our pupils to become geographers. We aim to develop our pupil's understanding of place knowledge, locational knowledge, understanding of environmental, human and physical features and processes, and map skills and fieldwork. We intend to provide opportunities for children to explore their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, enabling them to develop a greater understanding of their own place in the world around them and their rights and responsibilities as global citizens.

Cultural Capital

We know that knowledge-rich experiences are essential to children’s social development. Therefore, we have planned our Geography curriculum to reflect this through play, conversation, problem-solving and debates. Children will explore what it means to them to live on the Fylde Coast, including local area excursions, giving first-hand experiences such as Beach Buddies beach-clean, Fairhaven Lake and The River Wyre.

Enabling children to develop their cultural capital throughout their school journey is an essential part of our Geography curriculum. As well as learning about their local area, our curriculum embraces cultural diversity, introducing people from different backgrounds, cultures, and religions, such as famous explorers from the past and present, and investigating our changing natural world. Children gain broader knowledge, encouraging them to become well-rounded individuals.

How we Implement Geography at Norbreck

Our Geography curriculum has been created to provide opportunities for our youngest pupils to explore their immediate and local environment and develop ways in which they can show their understanding of the world around them via practical activities and local area visits. Our curriculum starts locally in EYFS and Key Stage 1 and then progresses further in Key Stage 2 by covering a much wider area. Pupils cover a wide range of topics throughout their school journey and, as such, are able to develop a thorough understanding of geographical skills, knowledge and vocabulary. Each topic focusses on the 'Big Question' and lessons are sequenced around key components to help children answer the 'Big Question'. As pupils progress from Early Years to Year 6, learning objectives get progressively more challenging and they explore more diverse materials.

Long Term Plan

Impact

As a geographer, by the end of Year 6, Norbreck Primary Academy pupils will be able to locate a range of places on a variety of maps; digital maps, globes, atlases and photographs. Pupils will have a range of well-developed geographical skills and be able to carry out effective fieldwork, gathering and analysing data appropriately. Pupils will have knowledge and understanding of a wide range of geographical vocabulary. They will be adept at comparing and contrasting life in their own country against those in many others. They will be able to discuss geographical similarities and differences between a range of places and have a good understanding of what it means to be a global citizen. As pupils move through school, they develop knowledge and understanding alongside an appreciation for their local area and its place within the wider geographical context. By the end of Key Stage 2 children will be keen Geographers who are well-equipped with the geographical knowledge and skills needed to prepare them for the wider world.

Pupil Voice

At Norbreck Primary Academy, we place great importance on our students' opinions and perspectives when assessing the effectiveness of our Geography teaching. By actively listening to their feedback, we gain crucial insights into their experiences and views, which helps us refine and improve our Geography curriculum and maintain high standards in our teaching practices.

I loved it when we went on the minibus around Blackpool to see all the landmarks. We drew a map that had all the landmarks on it like the piers, Blackpool Tower and the Pleasure Beach.

Holly Year 2

I love maps. We looked at where our school is on the map then found other places near to us. I liked following the map to find different places.

Edward Year 1

Geography is really interesting. We learnt about different biomes around the world and how important they all are for our planet. The Amazon Rainforest is so impressive!
