P.E.

"Physical Education makes every child stronger and every life longer"

Our Intent

Our aim is to educate and promote the values of health and fitness for all pupils who attend Norbreck Primary Academy. By the time pupils leave Norbreck in Y6, they will have a clear understanding of how to lead an active, healthy lifestyle.

School Games Mark Awards

The intent of our PE Curriculum at Norbreck is to build strong foundations for life-long active and healthy lifestyles by:

  • Nurturing and adopting a growth mindset so children feel comfortable and confident to express themselves and their developing skills.
  • Setting high yet achievable expectations for all whilst understanding the individual needs of the children.
  • Developing the personal skills to work collaboratively and promoting the qualities of teamwork.
  • Helping children develop self-reflection tools to analyse their own performance and set goals to improve.
  • Supplying the knowledge of why and how to enhance both their physical fitness and mental well-being.
  • Using a broad range of curricular and extra-curricular opportunities to introduce new sporting events and further existing passions.

PE Cultural Capital

PE plays a crucial role in enriching cultural capital within our school community. Through diverse sports activities, children not only develop physical skills but also gain an appreciation for different cultures and traditions. Our PE curriculum is designed to expose children to a wide range of sports from around the world, encouraging them to understand the historical, social and cultural significance behind each activity. By participating in activities such as football, netball, dance, cricket, basketball, gymnastics and more, children not only enhance their physical fitness but also broaden their cultural horizons, promoting respect, empathy, and a sense of global citizenship. We believe that by promoting cultural capital through PE, we are preparing our children to thrive in an increasingly interconnected and diverse world.

How we Implement P.E. at Norbreck

Norbreck children will experience high quality PE lessons and will learn new skills through exposure to different sports.

  • In KS1, the children develop their fine and gross motor skills through our explicit FMS program whilst having the opportunities to practice these skills in dance, gymnastics and athletics.
  • In LKS2, children build upon their KS1 learning of FMS and apply these to specific games and activities such as, net and wall games, striking and fielding activities and invasion games. Children are also introduced to school swimming and are exposed to provision from local community providers.
  • In UKS2, children continue to build and refine their skills whilst applying them to specific sporting situations. Children are encouraged to experiment and develop their own tactics in order to achieve success.

Impact

At Norbreck Primary Academy, we believe that Physical Education in primary schools in the UK has a profound impact on pupils, influencing their physical, mental, and social development. Regular participation in PE promotes physical fitness, helping to combat childhood obesity and encouraging lifelong healthy habits. It enhances motor skills and coordination, which are crucial for overall physical development. Furthermore, PE supports mental well-being by reducing stress, improving concentration, and boosting self-esteem. Socially, it enhances teamwork, cooperation, and respect through group activities and sportsmanship. Overall, physical education is essential in shaping well-rounded, healthy, and socially adept individuals.

Pupil Voice

We regularly listen to our children to understand their attitudes toward PE, which helps us shape our curriculum and extracurricular clubs at Norbreck.

PE is so much fun. I loved Tag Rugby the most this year.
