Year 4 Multiplication Check
What is the Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check?
The Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) is a nationwide requirement for all schools and takes place annually in June. This year, the check will run from 3rd June to 13th June.
The main purpose of the check is to identify which children may need extra support with their times tables. It is not a test of your child’s overall ability, but rather a tool to help ensure that every child has the necessary skills.
The check is an online test in which pupils answer 25 questions on multiplication tables from 2 to 12. They are given six seconds per question and three seconds’ rest between each question. The entire test typically lasts less than five minutes.
How Can I Help My Child Prepare?
The key to making this check stress-free is early, consistent practice. Building times tables practice into your daily routine can help your child approach the test with confidence. Here are some simple yet effective ways to support your child in preparing for the check:
1. Use Times Table Wall Charts
Wall charts are a great visual tool for reinforcing times tables. You can download a chart and place it somewhere your child will see it regularly – like above the sink or near the fridge. Seeing the facts daily will help your child absorb them without even realising it!
2. Learn Tricks for Challenging Times Tables
Sometimes tables are trickier than others, but there are lots of fun and clever tricks to help your child remember them. Check out our guide for helpful tips and tricks for mastering these tougher times tables!
3. Play Times Tables Games
Games are a fun and engaging way to practice. Why not try playing snap with times tables flashcards? Matching calculations to answers as quickly as possible turns practice into a challenge and keeps things exciting. Just a few minutes each day can make a huge difference!
4. Make it Real
To help your child see the value of learning times tables, try relating it to everyday life. For example, ask them to scale up a recipe or figure out if they have enough money for more of their favourite things (like sweets or football cards). This real-world application will make multiplication feel more meaningful.
5. Practise on a Device
Familiarising your child with online platforms like Times Table Rock Stars can help them feel comfortable answering questions on a screen. There are also plenty of fun times tables games available online to reinforce tricky facts and make learning enjoyable.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher.
